FASHION, TELL THE TRUTH
This is a climate and ecological emergency.
FASHION, TELL THE TRUTH is a campaign lead by #BoycottFashion, an Extinction Rebellion working group consisting of industry practitioners. Our mission with this campaign is to direct the fashion industry away from destruction and towards using its power of persuasion to save all life on earth.
We call on our industry to join us in telling the truth. This is a declaration of emergency for the fashion industry, but it's also much more than that. In an industry where co-opting green initiatives to sell more is rife, we want commitment to making the hard truths known and taking action to demand change.
(I/WE) PLEDGE TO TELL THE TRUTH
As creatives, business people and media in the fashion, textiles, clothing and footwear industries,
we declare a climate and ecological emergency.
In this time of existential crisis, survival of all life must be prioritised over profit and ego.
Fashion dictates what’s in and what’s out. By using creativity to change the social code, fashion has a unique power of persuasion. It makes the rules; it manifests our wildest dreams; it connects and divides; it’s how we communicate who we are and what we believe in.
This industry and many more, use fashion to tell us, 'I shop therefore I am'. But this needless consumption is destroying our planet.
To be on the right side of history, we now have a choice. We can use this power to inspire change by telling the truth OR continue manifesting our collective denial, feeding the dream of excess and infinite resources and the destruction it creates.
LET'S TELL THE TRUTH: THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN.
The most ‘sustainable’ choice, is to make do with what we already have. We need to stop producing, advertising and consuming that which we don’t need and our planet can’t afford. Let’s put our time, creativity and resources towards making the truth known and supporting systemic change.
If livelihoods depend on extracting resources instead of regenerating the planet, we must not compromise and accept our demise. We must rebel to protect the well-being of all life, for now and for generations to come. We must start to say, enough is enough.
THIS IS NOT AN EMPTY DECLARATION.
This is not a pledge to be transparent about our operations.
We know that business as usual can’t stop overnight. But telling the truth can start NOW.
Stop the dream and communicate the reality of our situation. Admit the inconsistencies and contradictions. Admit that incremental ‘solutions’ won’t save life on earth; only systemic change will. Use your power to communicate the truth about this crisis and how this industry is complicit. Say it as though all life depends on it.
